Schools in Ukraine can switch to distance learning or extend holidays until 19 January

Due to severe weather conditions, it is recommended that educational institutions in Ukraine temporarily switch to a remote format or extend the winter holidays at least until 19 January 2026. This was reported by Yulia Sviridenko.

These are institutions of pre-school education, general secondary, vocational and higher education.


What the recommendations include

According to the official, the solution aims to reduce the risks to children, students and education staff in the face of bad weather and difficult logistics.

Recommended:

  • temporarily switch to distance learning or extend the winter holidays until 19 January;

  • if possible transfer enterprises, institutions and organisations to a remote mode of operation, The programme will be developed taking into account the situation in each region;

  • ensure the continuity of educational platforms and communication with parents and students.


Exceptions for critical infrastructure

The report notes that the recommendations do not apply to critical infrastructure facilities and other institutions for which remote work is impossible under martial law.

The decision on the format of work and training will be made by local authorities taking into account the weather situation, the state of the energy sector and security factors.

Ukraine is experiencing a period of severe weather conditions, which is hampering the operation of transport, energy infrastructure and access to educational institutions. Coupled with military risks, regions are increasingly switching to remote learning and work formats to reduce the burden on life support systems and minimise threats to the population.
