Petrol may rise to UAH 100 per litre: experts warn of risk of panic in the market

Petrol prices may rise sharply in Ukraine in the event of a negative scenario on global energy markets. This was stated by a fuel market expert Dmitry Lyoushkin.

According to him, in the event of panic in the market and a further rise in oil prices, the price of petrol could theoretically rise to UAH 100 per litre.

A similar scenario is possible if global tensions around the Middle East lead to disruptions in oil supplies or a sharp jump in global stock prices.

Allegations of «monopolistic collusion» in the market

At the same time, economist Andriy Novak says that the current rise in fuel prices in Ukraine is not fully explained by the international situation.

According to him, Large Ukrainian petrol station chains have significant fuel reserves, The company has been purchasing these long before the recent geopolitical events.

«The rise in fuel prices is now a monopolistic conspiracy of Ukrainian petrol stations: all major networks operate with reserves for at least three months. That is, any petrol being sold today was bought long before the Iranian events,» the economist explained.

The expert emphasises that in such circumstances prompt price increases may not be related to real costs, but to market behaviour.

Context: global energy risk

Tensions around Iran and fighting in the Middle East are already affecting global energy markets. Due to risks to shipping and possible disruptions in oil supplies, energy prices are showing sharp volatility.

Ukraine is almost entirely dependent on imported fuel, so any global oil market turmoil is quickly reflected in the price of petrol and diesel in the country.

Analysts warn that the psychological factor and panic buying can accelerate price growth even faster than real changes in the oil market.
