On the night of 10 October Russian troops launched another massive attack on Kyiv. According to the city authorities, several waves of kamikaze drones and missiles were fired at the capital. Some of the targets were shot down by air defence forces, but debris fell in residential areas.
Lesions and consequences
The explosions occurred in several districts of the city, most of them in the central and left-bank parts. In the Pechersk district, a drone fragment hit a high-rise building, causing a fire on the upper floors. Rescuers evacuated residents, including children and the elderly.
Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko reported that at least 12 people were injured, eight of whom were hospitalised and the rest received outpatient care. Among the wounded were two utility workers who had arrived to respond to the attack.
Service operation and recovery
The SES spent several hours extinguishing the fires and clearing the rubble. Medics quickly transported the wounded to city hospitals. Power companies are restoring electricity supply, as some consumers on the left bank were without power for several hours.
The metro temporarily operated in a sheltered mode. Trains resumed running in the morning, but there may be short-term stops during new alarms.
Government response
Vitali Klitschko called on Kyiv residents not to ignore the air raid alerts and stressed that the air defence system had prevented much greater damage.
«The defence forces shot down most of the drones, but the wreckage caused fires and injuries. Kyiv will stand, despite the enemy's attempts to intimidate people,» the mayor said.
The Kyiv City State Administration also reported that utility services continue to carry out restoration work, and psychologists are working with residents of the affected buildings.
Context.
This is the third massive attack on the capital in the last week. Analysts believe that the enemy is trying to deplete Ukraine's air defences before the winter season by targeting energy infrastructure again.
