Minister of Defence of Belgium: Moscow will be levelled to the ground if Russia attacks NATO
Minister of Defence of Belgium Theo Franken made a strong statement, warning that Moscow will be levelled to the ground, Russia would be able to respond if it attacked any NATO member state.
«Putin is well aware that if he uses nuclear weapons, Moscow will be wiped off the map,» Franken said in an interview with De Morgen.
Reaction and context
Franken emphasised that The Alliance has sufficient deterrence potential, and any attempt by the Kremlin to start a war against NATO will have fatal consequences for russia itself.
He also emphasised that Kremlin's aggressive policy threatens not only Ukraine but also the stability of the whole of Europe, and therefore NATO member states should be prepared for a quick response.
«Our allies must realise that now is not the time to compromise with the criminal regime. If Moscow starts this war, it will not survive it,» the minister said.
Background.
The statement came amid intensified discussions in Europe about strengthening defence and NATO's readiness for a possible expansion of the conflict.
Earlier, Franken called for an increase in funding for the armed forces and an expansion of the Alliance's presence in Eastern Europe.
