UK considers transferring nuclear weapons to Germany due to Russia's threat
The UK should start negotiations with Germany on possible joint access of the German side to the British nuclear deterrent. This was reported by the The Telegraph with reference to senior UK defence officials.
The reason for the proposal is the «critical» nuclear threat from the Russian Federation, which, according to British leaders, puts Europe in a position to decisive steps in the area of nuclear deterrence.
Details of the initiative
According to the publication:
Germany is already engaged in «strategic talks» with France on the possible strengthening of its nuclear defences.
British military leaders, including the former NATO Secretary General, have expressed support for the idea of transferring/sharing nuclear weapons between London and Berlin.
However, these talks have not yet been officially launched, and there is no final decision on the details, including who would have the nuclear button in the event of a crisis.
One of the main problems is exactly control over triggers of nuclear use - One former military leader noted that involving a large number of countries in the decision-making process for a launch creates “unnecessary” complexity against a single aggressor.
Significance for European security
This initiative demonstrates Shifting the paradigm of nuclear deterrence in Europe:
Germany can take on more responsibility in continental defence.
The United Kingdom, having its own nuclear arsenal (Trident system), is considering sharing or transferring it.
This comes amid concerns about the future defence role of the United States in Europe under a possible new US administration.
Analysts note that such a move could change the configuration of NATO's nuclear and defence policy and call into question the traditional American “nuclear umbrella” in Europe.
