Britain to offer NATO-like security guarantees to Ukraine as part of Trump's “peace plan”
According to the report The Telegraph, The UK intends to offer Ukraine security guarantees similar to NATO Article 5 as part of the so-called «Trump plan» to end the war with Russia.
What is offered
The UK will commit to providing Ukraine with «NATO-style security guarantees» - that is, a guarantee that an attack on Ukraine will be perceived as an attack on Britain and its allies.
The document plans to make these guarantees part of a broader 28-point peace agreement between the US, Ukraine and Russia.
Along with security guarantees, mechanisms should be established for monitoring and conditional cancellation of the guarantee in case of violations by Ukraine.
Why it matters
The proposed guarantees are intended to provide Ukraine with long-term security without formal accession to NATO, which was one of the key topics in the negotiations. The approach avoids a direct contradiction with Russia over NATO enlargement.
Context and challenges
As part of the Trump Plan, Ukraine's commitments include limiting its military forces, refusing to join NATO or host foreign bases, which is met with considerable opposition.
European partners expressed concern that such a plan could benefit Russia and weaken Kyiv's position.
There are significant «red lines» on the part of Ukraine: the preservation of territorial integrity, the right to defence, and guaranteed international protection through membership or partnership.
