Bulgaria, Greece and Romania agree to co-finance North-South railway line

A meeting of high-ranking representatives of the Bulgaria, Greece and Romania, as well as European Commission. The parties discussed coordination of actions within the framework of the development of the North-South transport corridor.

Details of the agreements

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport of Bulgaria Grozdan Karadzhov announced plans to jointly apply to the EU for funding for the construction of a high-speed railway line that will run through Athens, Thessaloniki, Sofia and Bucharest.

Minister of Transport of Greece Konstantinos Kiranakis noted that by 2027 it is planned to provide a high-quality passenger railway connection between Thessaloniki and Sofia.

Joint coordination

The three countries agreed to work in full synchronisation during the planning and implementation stages of infrastructure projects to avoid delays and bureaucratic obstacles along the North-South corridor.

Bulgaria's priorities

Among Bulgaria's key objectives is to accelerate the project to build a new bridge across the Danube between Russ and Gurgevo, and the resumption of ferry services on the Danube.

Context.

The development of the North-South transport corridor is seen as a strategic project to strengthen the economic integration of Southeast Europe and strengthen logistics links between the three seas.
