The recognition of Palestine is a historic event.

Three Commonwealth countries recognise the State of Palestine

  • London, Ottawa and Canberra officially recognised the State of Palestine, coordinating the announcement on the eve of the UN General Assembly in New York.

  • Governments emphasise that the step should restore the «two-state» perspective» і is not a reward for terrorism; Revenues/sanctions against Hamas remain in place.

What happened

  • United Kingdom. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated: «Today the United Kingdom recognises the State of Palestine» as a signal of support for a peaceful settlement and coexistence with a secure Israeli state.

  • Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the country was joining the more than 140 states that have already made such recognition «to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution».

  • Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Foreign Ministry confirmed formal recognition; The move was agreed with Canada and the UK.

The announcement of three states synchronous and is presented as an attempt to shift the stagnant political trajectory of the conflict.

Reactions.

  • Palestinian side welcomed the decision as historic.

  • Israel sharply criticised the move, calling it a false signal; USA objected.

What is changing in practice

  • Rising diplomatic status Palestinian missions and expanding contractual cooperation with the Troika.

  • Recognition itself does not create a state «overnight» and does not remove the demands for reforms of the Palestinian Authority and guarantees of Israel's security.

Why it matters

This is the first simultaneous recognition of Palestine by three leading Western allies in many years. It is intended to keep the prospect of negotiations alive and stop the further erosion of the two-state solution amid the war in Gaza and the expansion of Israeli settlements.

What's next

Consultations are expected at the UN and within the «like-minded group» on coordinating the next stepssupport for reforms in Palestine, sanctions against Hamas, and diplomatic pressure on the parties to resume the political process. Other countries may announce their accession in the coming days.
