IAEA Director General Grossi announces truce between Ukraine and Russia at ZNPP
A temporary truce is declared between Ukraine and Russia in the area of Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. This was stated by the CEO IAEA Raphael Grossi.
What we know
According to Grossi, the ceasefire will continue several days and aims to provide repair of damaged power lines, which are critical for stable power supply to the plant and its safety systems.
Context of the situation
Zaporizhzhia NPP has been repeatedly left without external power supply due to hostilities in the area, which posed serious risks to nuclear safety. The temporary ceasefire is intended to enable power engineers to carry out emergency repair work safely.
У IAEA emphasise that a stable power supply is a key condition for the safe operation of a nuclear power plant, even in the shutdown mode.
The IAEA's position
Grossi emphasised that the agency will continue to insist on creation of a nuclear safety zone around the ZNPP and calls on the parties to refrain from any actions that may threaten the facility.
No official details on the mechanism for monitoring compliance with the ceasefire have been made public.
