China and Russia are waging a “sex war” against the US
British edition The Times reported that the intelligence services of China and Russia have launched a large-scale espionage operation in Silicon Valley, using romantic relationships as an instrument of influence.
According to journalists, the following are being sent to the US dozens of attractive Chinese and Russian women, who meet, marry and have children with American scientists and high-tech professionals.
The purpose of the “sex war”
The main goal is to gain access to developments in artificial intelligence, defence technologies and communication systems.
Through family ties and cohabitation, spies are able to learn technical details, access and corporate information, which they then pass on to their home countries' intelligence services.
How it works
“It's not just about romantic relationships, it's about creating entire family cells for intelligence purposes. It's a slow but effective tactic,” the Times article says.
Journalists note that such activities are actively carried out in California, San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose, The city is home to the headquarters of tech companies, from Google to NVIDIA.
US reaction
For several years, the US intelligence services have been warn of “unconventional methods of espionage”, China and Russia are using the same methods.
The FBI is stepping up its scrutiny of foreign marriages and visa programmes, but admits that “sex spying” is extremely difficult to prove legally.
