European leaders gather for summit in Copenhagen after drone incidents
Copenhagen, Denmark - European politicians have gathered for several summits in the Danish capital this week, with the main topics being security, defence and support for Ukraine. This comes amid a series of mysterious airspace violations involving unmanned aerial vehicles.
Drone incidents: background to the situation
In recent days, Denmark has recorded several cases of drone infiltration over civilian airports and military installations. In particular, one incident led to the temporary closure of Copenhagen Airport for several hours.
In response, the Danish authorities have imposed a temporary ban on civilian drone flights from Monday to Friday to avoid confusion between legal and potentially hostile drones during the events.
Sweden, in turn, sent anti-UAV systems and radars to Denmark to support the security of the summit.
In preparation for the meetings, the country also received assistance from other European countries and allies.
Strategic decisions: The «drone wall» and funding for Ukraine
The summit agenda includes several key proposals:
The «drone wall» project. It is about creating a network of sensors, radars and defence equipment capable of detecting, tracking and neutralising enemy UAVs that violate European airspace.
Financing Ukraine through frozen Russian assets. The European Commission proposed to use part of these funds to create a €140 billion «Reparation Loan» - a loan that Ukraine would repay if Russia pays reparations.
Discussion of the possibility of gradually phasing out imports of Russian liquefied natural gas by 2027.
Reactions and sentiments
Prime Minister of Denmark Mete Frederiksen warned that hybrid warfare is only the beginning of a complex campaign, and Europe must act quickly.
Latvia, Estonia, and other Baltic states, as well as Poland and Ukraine, point to the potential for a distraction manoeuvre: Russia can use such incidents to reduce Western attention to Ukraine and sow internal disputes.
Summary and significance
This summit in Copenhagen has not only symbolic but also practical significance: it can become a platform for making decisions that will radically change the EU's approach to airspace security and cooperation with Ukraine in the context of hybrid warfare.
