The destruction of Darnytska CHP-4 in Kyiv: restoration will take years

Footage of the destroyed Darnytsia Heat and Power Plant 4, which suffered extensive damage as a result of Russian strikes, has been posted online. The published materials show significant structural damage, damaged equipment and infrastructure of the facility.

According to preliminary estimates, the degree of damage is critical. Experts suggest that the plant's restoration could take years, as it is not just a matter of repairing individual components, but actually a complex reconstruction of the energy complex.

The significance of the facility for the capital

Darnytska CHPP-4 was an important element of Kyiv's energy system, providing heat and partially electricity to a large part of the city. Its outage puts an additional burden on other generation sources and complicates the heating season, especially in severe frost conditions.

Power engineers note that even after the end of hostilities, the rapid restoration of such facilities will require significant financial resources, time and the supply of specialised equipment.

The context of the energy strikes

Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have been ongoing since the beginning of the full-scale invasion and have intensified in the winter. Heat and power plants, substations and other critical facilities are regularly targeted, leading to heat and power outages in various regions of the country.

The Ukrainian authorities and international partners emphasise the need to strengthen air defence and restore the power grid to minimise the impact of further attacks.
