Life sentence for a war criminal
For the first time in Ukraine, the court ruled life sentence to a Russian military officer who shot a captured Ukrainian defender.
This was reported in the To the Security Service of Ukraine and To the National Police.
The convicted person is Dmitry Kurashov, a Russian citizen who served as a rifleman in the unit «Storm-V» 127th motorised rifle division Eastern Military District of the Russian Federation.
On 6 January 2024, he and a group of occupants attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders near the village of Pryyutne in the Zaporizhzhya region.
During the assault on Kurashov shot an AFU serviceman at close range, who, having exhausted his ammunition, surrendered.
Justice was served
On the same day, Ukrainian Defence forces regained ground and Kurashov was taken prisoner.
Following an investigation conducted by SBU and National Police, We have collected an indisputable evidence base - video, testimonies of fellow soldiers and forensic medical examination.
«The verdict is unprecedented: this is the first time an occupier has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing of a prisoner. This is an important signal that war criminals will not escape punishment,» the SBU said.
Context.
The shooting of unarmed prisoners of war is war crime, which violates the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.
Ukraine continues to record such crimes and submit evidence to International Criminal Court.
