European Commission loses access to X ad panel after €120m fine
The European Commission no longer has access to the social media advertising control panel X after the EU fined the platform for €120 million. This was reported by Politico.
What happened
The fine was imposed for violating the transparency provisions of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission stated that X:
misled users with a «blue tick»;
failed to ensure the transparency of the advertising repository;
did not provide access to public data for researchers.
After that, the EU representatives noticed that their advertising account was no longer working.
Reaction X
Head of Product Solutions X Nikita Bier confirmed that the European Commission's advertising account had been closed.
He added that the EU was allegedly trying to exploit an ad editor «exploit» to publish links that mislead users, increasing the reach of the content.
«Your advertising account has been blocked,» Bier wrote, hinting that the platform's rules should be the same for everyone, including EU institutions.
Context.
The confrontation between the EU and X has been ongoing since the adoption of stricter digital rules. The €120 million fine is the first large-scale decision against the platform since the introduction of the DSA.
