EU disappointed with US «very bad plan» for Ukraine - new «peace plan» called a list of concessions to Putin

The new US «peace plan» for Ukraine has drawn sharp criticism within the European Union. According to Politico, One senior EU official familiar with the document called it «a very bad plan for Ukraine» and a list of points that actually meet the Kremlin's needs.

Details of the criticism

European officials argue that the new US proposal looks like a set of concessions aimed at «satisfying Putin» and contains no real mechanisms to guarantee Ukraine's security or to force Russia to fulfil its obligations.

«This is a very bad plan for Ukraine,» Politico quoted an EU official as saying.

Sources note that the document raises concerns about possible pressure on Kyiv to agree to unfavourable ceasefire terms.

European disillusionment

Politico writes that the EU is experiencing another strategic disappointment:
Despite the desire to «take a seat at the negotiating table» and the willingness to finance a significant part of military assistance to Ukraine, Washington practically does not take into account European developments.

European capitals fear that:

  • The United States can act independently, forming a model of «post-war settlement» without the EU's participation;

  • The US plan could create a basis for a ceasefire on terms favourable to Russia;

  • Kyiv will be under pressure from various centres of influence, which will weaken its position in future negotiations.

Context.

The criticism comes amid active discussions between Washington, Brussels and Kyiv on the future formula for peace. The EU is simultaneously preparing own alternative, The US is planning to present it in the near future, but is not sure that it will be taken into account in US political calculations.
