European leaders warned Zelenskyy: US may put pressure on territories without security guarantees
According to the information Der Spiegel, leading European leaders called on the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky be extremely careful in negotiations with US special representatives Kushner і Witkoff.
The reason is that Washington may try to force Ukraine to discuss territorial concessions without any real security guarantees.
What EU leaders are saying
The publication conveys harsh assessments of European politicians:
Emmanuel Macron called the US position «betrayal of allies».
Angela Merkel said that Washington «plays games that can have dangerous consequences for Ukraine».
Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, warned: «Zelensky should not be left alone with Kushner and Vitkoff».
Mark Rütte, NATO Secretary General, supported the need for political and security support for Ukraine in these negotiations.
According to Der Spiegel, Europe fears that the United States may try to «impose a quick peace» at any cost - even at the cost of Ukrainian territories.
Why the situation is alarming
European leaders believe:
The US could offer Ukraine a deal that will not contain legally binding guarantees;
Trump seeks to show «success in peacekeeping» without taking into account the long-term risks;
Russia could use any weakening of the West's position to exert further pressure.
European states emphasise: There can be no negotiations on the territories without an agreed position of the allies and security guarantees for Ukraine.
