In the province of Maguindanao del Sur in the Philippines, armed assailants attacked the mayor's car.
Armed group attacks mayor's motorcade in southern Philippines Shariff-Aguac, using a grenade launcher. The incident took place in one of the country's most sensitive provinces.
After the attack, the perpetrators tried to flee the scene, but were quickly pursued by police, military and local volunteer units.
Details of the attack
According to local security forces, a shootout took place during the pursuit. Three of the attackers were killed as they put up armed resistance to law enforcement.
As a result of the attack two mayoral bodyguards were injured and taken to hospital. The condition of the victims is being checked.
The mayor himself during the attack was not injured.

The province of Maguindanao del Sur has long been one of the most unstable regions in the Philippines. Armed incidents related to inter-clan conflicts, polygamist violence and the activities of illegal armed groups are regularly recorded here.
Attacks on local politicians in the region are not uncommon, especially on the eve of election campaigns or amid a struggle for influence.
