Friedrich Merz on Russia's return to the G7
Merz said that most G7 members are not ready to return Russia to the format.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the majority of G7 countries do not support the idea of Russia's return to the G7 format. He said this when commenting on information about possible diplomatic scenarios being discussed against the backdrop of peace processes.

According to Mertz, the six participants - in addition to the United States - are «there is no readiness» to re-admit Russia to the club of the world's leading economies. The Chancellor stressed that Europe's position on this issue is clear and consistent.

Context.

Formerly the British The Telegraph reported on the leak of documents according to which Europe allegedly agreed to Russia's return to the G8 as part of an alternative «peace plan». However, the reaction of European leaders suggests that this information is either incomplete or heavily distorted.

The G7 countries expelled Russia from the format in 2014 after the occupation of Crimea. After the full-scale invasion, the position of the majority of club members remained unchanged: a return is possible only if Ukraine's territorial integrity is fully restored and the Kremlin changes its behaviour.
