Britain considers forceful seizure of tankers of Russia's shadow fleet
The United Kingdom, together with its NATO allies, is working on military scenarios for the seizure of tankers belonging to the so-called Russian shadow fleet. This was reported by The Guardian citing government sources.
Possible actions at sea
London confirmed that the relevant options for operations have already been worked out. These are vessels without a legitimate flag, which under the law of the sea can be considered «stateless», opening up the possibility of their seizure.
London also allows for the confiscation of Russian oil and its subsequent sale. The proceeds could be used to support Ukraine.
Fleet readiness and the risk of escalation
According to the publication, the Royal Navy and the British Marines are ready to conduct appropriate operations. At the same time, the British leadership fears a possible escalation by Moscow in response to such steps.
Context.
Russia's shadow fleet is used to circumvent international sanctions and transport oil outside official restrictions. Western countries see tighter control over such transport as one of the key tools for putting economic pressure on the Kremlin.
