The number of Ukrainian asylum applications in Germany has increased dramatically
According to the publication WELT, Following the lifting of restrictions on the departure of men aged 18-22 from Ukraine, the number of citizens seeking temporary protection in Germany, increased by 10 times.
If in May there were about 100 applications per week, and now up to 1000.
The total number of refugees is growing rapidly
As of September, in Germany the number of Ukrainian refugees increased from 7.9 thousand to 18.7 thousand, indicating a new wave of migration.
The majority of applicants are young men, who arrived after the official easing of the exit rules.
«This is a significant increase that exceeds all previous forecasts. The federal services are already working in a heightened mode,» WELT said.
Reasons and Berlin's reaction
German authorities attribute this surge to new Ukrainian changes to the mobilisation age, The law allowed some young men to leave the country legally.
At the same time, Berlin emphasises that Ukraine remains a safe country for most citizens to live in, but all applications are considered individually.
«We understand the complexity of the situation, but the asylum system cannot replace the mobilisation decisions of other countries,» said a representative of the German Interior Ministry.
Ukrainians remain the largest group of asylum seekers in the EU
Despite a decrease in the total number of new applications in the European Union, Ukrainians remain the largest group of refugees on the continent.
According to the European Commission, since the beginning of the war more than 1.2 million Ukrainians continue to enjoy temporary protection in EU countries.
