Greenland to strengthen defence within NATO and again rejects Trump's claims
The Greenlandic government announced its intention to intensify efforts to ensure the defence of the Arctic territory within the framework of cooperation with NATO and rejected the ambitions of the US President again Donald Trump to control the island.
The government's statement emphasises that the security of Greenland is a shared interest of all Allies, including the United States.
«All NATO Allies, including the United States, have a common interest in the defence of Greenland. The Greenlandic government coalition will work with Denmark to ensure that dialogue and development of the island's defence takes place exclusively within the framework of NATO cooperation,» the government said.
Details of the application
According to the Greenlandic authorities, the priority remains to strengthen the defence presence in the Arctic through coordinated decisions with NATO allies, rather than unilateral initiatives.
The government confirmed:
Coordination of defence steps with Denmark;
focus on NATO's collective security mechanisms;
rejection of any scenarios of transferring or controlling the territory to third countries.
Thus, the island's authorities have effectively put an end to discussions about the possible «seizure» or change of Greenland's status.
Context.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly publicly stated the strategic importance of Greenland for US national security and has allowed for the possibility of acquiring or establishing control over it.
Against this backdrop, NATO countries are intensifying discussions on Arctic security due to Russia's and China's growing military activity in the region. Germany, the United Kingdom and other allies are considering the formats of new Alliance missions to strengthen monitoring and deterrence in the northern latitudes.
Analysts point out that the Arctic is becoming increasingly important in global security, logistics and energy, which is directly related to the interests of the EU, NATO and international politics in general.
