Greece and Ukraine to jointly produce maritime drones at Greek shipyards

Greece and Ukraine have agreed to joint production of marine drones at the Greek shipyards. This is reported by the publication Kathimerini, specifying that the agreement was reached during the recent visit of the President Vladimir Zelensky to Athens.

According to the publication, the agreement stipulates that the drones will be produced by for two armies at the same time - part of the batch will be transferred to Ukraine, while the rest will go to the Greek Armed Forces. For Athens, this will be an important enhancement of its naval capabilities amid tense relations with Turkey.

Where production will be deployed

The project is likely to be implemented at Scaramanga shipyard, one of the largest in Greece. Local specialists will produce it:

  • electronic and optical control systems,

  • sensors and navigation sensors,

  • explosive components - if necessary.

Kathimerini notes that joint maritime drones will become an improved, modernised version Ukrainian drones, which will be integrated with Greek technology.

Further expansion of cooperation

If the production of maritime drones is successful, Athens and Kyiv have already preliminarily discussed the possibility of moving to the next stage - the development of unmanned submarines (UUVs) for the navies of the two states.
