Gripen fighters to be produced in Ukraine in 2033 - Shmyhal

Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said that production of Gripen fighters will start in Ukraine in 2033.
Relevant memorandum of cooperation was signed today between Ukrainian company and the Swedish aircraft manufacturer SAAB.

«This is a strategic event that paves the way for the creation of high-tech aviation production in Ukraine in line with NATO standards,» Shmyhal said.

What does the memorandum provide for

The document covers:

• technology transfer and staff training,

• Creation of production facilities in Ukraine,

• gradual expansion of production localisation,

• as well as joint maintenance of Gripen aircraft, which will be used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the first stage, Ukraine is expected to participate in Component assembly and maintenance, and then in full production cycle.

Implications for defence capability

The Gripen is one of the most effective multi-role fighters in the world, capable of operating from short strips and responding quickly to changing air conditions.
Its production in Ukraine will be a key step in the development of the national aviation industry and reduce dependence on imports.
