Indian Foreign Ministry reacts to Trump's statement
Ministry of External Affairs of India denied the statement of US President Donald Trump about an alleged agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop buying Russian oil.
This is reported by the Hindustan Times with reference to the official position of the agency.
«Our priority is to protect the interests of Indian consumers. This involves a broad base of energy sources and diversification of supplies in line with market conditions,» said the Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
Energy imports are a strategic necessity
The statement emphasises that India remains energy dependent on imports and makes procurement “based on economic feasibility, not political demands”.
New Delhi sticks to its policy of energy neutrality, The US and the EU are trying to avoid conflicts of interest between the US, EU and Russia.
Analysts recall that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, India has become one of the largest buyers of Russian oil at discounts, despite Western sanctions.
Washington's reaction and context
Earlier, Donald Trump said that received personal assurances from Modi to stop purchasing Russian oil.
However, official New Delhi has not confirmed such promises.
Washington comments that it “expects further consultations” with India on the country's role in the global energy balance.
Against the backdrop of increased US pressure on Beijing and Moscow, India is trying to maintain economic flexibility and partnerships with all key energy suppliers.
