Iran has handed over $2.7bn worth of missiles to Russia for war against Ukraine

Iran has sent missile weapons to Russia worth about 2.7 billion USD, to support the war against Ukraine. Bloomberg reports this with reference to sources familiar with the details of the agreements between Tehran and Moscow.

According to the agency, since the end of 2021, Russia has invested a total of about $4 billion into the Iranian military-industrial complex. As part of these agreements, the Kremlin received hundreds of ballistic missiles Fath-360, about 500 short-range missiles, and approximately 200 anti-aircraft missiles.

In addition to missile weapons, Iran has provided Russia with kamikaze drones Shahed-136 and transferred the technology that allowed the aggressor to set up its own production of drones under the Geranium-2 brand.

Analysts point out that such military-technical cooperation has significantly enhanced Russia's capabilities in waging war against Ukraine, in particular in terms of massive strikes on energy and civilian infrastructure.

Delivery details

Bloomberg reports that the missiles Fath-360 have a short range but high accuracy, which allows them to be used to hit tactical targets. Other short-range missiles and anti-aircraft systems are used to support offensive and defensive operations.

The drone production technologies transferred by Iran have allowed Russia to significantly increase its own production of attack drones, which are regularly used in attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

Context.

Military cooperation between Iran and Russia intensified after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Western countries have repeatedly accused Tehran of violating international sanctions and facilitating aggression.

The supply of Iranian missiles and drones increases the risk of war escalation and affects the security situation in Europe and the Middle East. The EU, the US and NATO are considering additional sanctions against the Iranian military-industrial complex and logistics supply chains.
