
Catherine Connolly became the new President of Ireland and condemned the invasion of Russia
The Irish presidential election was won by left-wing politician Catherine Connolly, who received 61.1% votes. Its main rival is Heather Humphries - scored only 21,1%.
The elections were held in a calm atmosphere, and voter participation was one of the highest in the last decade.

Catherine Connolly is a former Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of the Irish Parliament (Dáil Éireann), is known for its active stance on social justice, human rights and gender equality.

Position on Ukraine
After the election results were announced, Connolly said that Strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
«Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, but also for the future of Europe. Ireland must remain on the side of justice,» the newly elected president said.
She also noted that Ukrainian refugees have become an important part of Irish society and “integrated well through shared values of solidarity and compassion”.
