Italy supports Ukraine's accession to the EU, but calls the Balkans a priority
Italy supports Ukraine's accession to the European Union, but the Balkan countries remain Rome's priority in terms of EU enlargement. This was stated by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tayani.
«We support Ukraine's accession, but the Balkans come first for us. We have made a commitment to them, and they are a priority for us,» Tayani said.
Rome's position
According to the Foreign Minister, Italy is committed to further EU enlargement, but considers it necessary to fulfil its previous commitments to the Western Balkan states, which have been in the process of European integration for a long time.

Ukraine was granted candidate status for EU membership in 2022 and is currently in the process of implementing the European Commission's recommendations. At the same time, the European Union is negotiating membership with a number of Balkan countries, including North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia.
