Head of NABU Semen Kryvonos was previously on the wanted list - former SAPO prosecutor

Former prosecutor of the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office Stanislav Bronevytskyi said that the current director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine NABU Semyon Krivonos was previously wanted in a case of bribery of voters.

What Bronevytskyi says

According to Bronevytskyi, Kryvonos was prosecuted in 2009 for bribing voters in the interests of the party BYUT. He also claims that at that time the suspect was allegedly hiding from the investigation, and was therefore put on the wanted list, and the court granted permission to detain him and bring him to court in custody.

The ex-prosecutor notes that after receiving the guilty verdict, Kryvonos was released from punishment on the basis of an amnesty due to the presence of a young child. According to Bronevytskyi, the media reported that this could have been related to adoption.

Criticism of competitions and personnel decisions

Bronevytskyi also criticised the mechanism of competitive procedures for senior positions in anti-corruption agencies. In his opinion, these competitions have lost their independence and fairness, and the appointment of individual officials is the result of a «formal approach».

He also cited examples of former NABU employees being appointed to the SAPO, linking this to the decisions of the current leadership of the anti-corruption agencies.

Position of the parties

As of the time of publication NABU and Semyon Krivonos did not publicly comment on Stanislav Bronevytskyi's statements. The editorial board is ready to publish the position of all the parties mentioned after receiving official comments.

Context.

Semen Kryvonos was appointed head of the NABU in 2023 following a competitive selection process. The appointment of the heads of anti-corruption agencies remains one of the most sensitive topics in the public space, given the demands of international partners for transparency and independence of these institutions.
