Schools in Kyiv and Lviv change their schedules due to weather and energy situation

Kyiv and Lviv have decided to adjust the format of schooling due to extreme weather conditions and the tense energy situation.

Kyiv: flexible format and distance learning

According to the decision of the Kyiv City Military Administration, schools in the capital are switching to a flexible work format.

Depending on the security and technical situation in each particular institution:

  • lessons can be delivered in a mixed format;

  • some classes can be taught remotely;

  • school administrations adjust the timetable on their own.

The solution is aimed at minimising risks to students and staff in the face of cold weather and possible power outages.

Lviv: recommendation to extend the pause in education

Lviv city authorities recommended that schools not resume full-time education for another three days - from 12 to 14 January inclusive.

This decision was made in view of the following:

  • difficult weather conditions;

  • additional load on the power grid;

  • the need to ensure safe and stable heat supply in educational institutions.

The final decision on the organisation of the educational process remains with the administrations of educational institutions.

Impact on the educational process

Education departments are calling on parents and students:

  • keep track of messages from schools;

  • take into account possible schedule changes;

  • if possible, provide conditions for distance learning at home.

The local authorities emphasise that the safety of children and the stable operation of critical infrastructure in the face of martial law and severe weather remain a priority.

Context.

Ukraine is experiencing a period of sharp cold snap, which is accompanied by an increased load on the power grid and localised power outages in some regions. Local authorities are adjusting the operation of educational institutions, businesses and transport to take into account the security and technical situation.
