«Rehabilitation centre» where people were held in slavery exposed in Kyiv region

In Kyiv region, law enforcement officers exposed a pseudo-rehabilitation centre where dozens of people were illegally detained under the guise of treatment.

According to police, the centre's premises were occupied by 58 people, who were forcibly isolated from the outside world and forced to work. During the special operation, we managed to free 16 people, The victims include a minor. The victims are being provided with medical and psychological assistance.


Conditions of maintenance and operation

The investigation established that people:

  • beaten and intimidated;

  • isolated from relatives and the outside world;

  • they were administered potent drugs;

  • forced to do hard physical labour.

According to preliminary estimates, the monthly «income» from the exploitation of victims was about UAH 1 million.


Who organised the scheme

Law enforcers reported that the illegal activity was organised by the head of the NGO together with its co-founder.

The group also included 12 people, Among them were the so-called «supervisors» responsible for controlling the detainees.


Criminal proceedings

The organiser and his accomplices have already been served with a notice of suspicion under articles related to human trafficking and torture.

Investigative actions are ongoing to identify all victims and possible additional episodes of criminal activity.

In Ukraine, illegal «rehabilitation centres» are periodically exposed, which are actually used for forced labour and detention of people without their consent.

Law enforcers urge relatives to check the activities of such institutions and immediately report suspicious cases.
