China introduces arrests for sending «obscene content»

In China, with 1 January a new law will come into force, which provides for criminal liability for sending «obscene content» on the Internet. This was reported by the The Washington Post.

What the law provides for

The new rules are officially aimed at protection of minors and support for the so-called «moral order» in society.

In particular:

  • the authorities will control any transmission of intimate content in popular messengers WeChat and QQ;

  • for sending such content, the following is provided 10-15 days of administrative arrest and a fine of up to $700.

The most severe penalties

If the materials involve children, or sent to minors, the penalty can reach up to 12 years' imprisonment. Liability is incurred even for shipping, regardless of who is the author of the content.
