«US security guarantees will not create a lasting peace» - Lavrov's statement

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov said that potential US security guarantees for Ukraine, in his opinion, would not be able to ensure «lasting peace». He said this during a public commentary for the media.

Doubts about the viability of guarantees

According to Lavrov, he has no information about any security guarantees already agreed between the US and Ukraine. At the same time, he questioned the very idea of the effectiveness of such agreements.

In his statement, he used the phrase «preservation of the Ukrainian regime», which is in line with the traditional rhetoric of the Russian side towards the Ukrainian authorities.

International negotiations continue

The issue of security guarantees for Ukraine is regularly discussed in bilateral and multilateral contacts with Western partners, including the United States. They discuss possible models of long-term military and security support.

As of now, there is no officially agreed and published final package of guarantees.

Differences in approaches

Western countries see security guarantees as a tool to deter further aggression and stabilise the situation. The Russian side publicly criticises such initiatives and claims that they allegedly complicate the achievement of peace agreements.

Experts note that such statements are part of the diplomatic and information position of the parties in the ongoing conflict.
