Lithuania closes the border with Belarus

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lithuania reported on complete closure of the border with Belarus.
The decision was made due to Increased security risks and threats of hybrid attacks, The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said. Agne Bilotaite.

«We observe increased activity of the Belarusian special services and the risk of provocations. The border will be closed indefinitely until the situation stabilises,» the minister said.


Reasons for the decision

The Lithuanian authorities note that in recent months, there have been some violations at the border:

  • increase in the number of border violations from Belarus;

  • migrant transfers towards the EU;

  • activity of the Belarusian security forces, acting in coordination with Russian structures.


What will change for citizens

  • Temporarily private and freight traffic is stopped through all checkpoints.

  • The only exceptions are humanitarian transport and diplomatic missions.

  • Lithuanian border guards transferred to enhanced service mode.


Context.

This is not the first such step by Lithuania: in 2023, some checkpoints were also closed after incidents involving Belarusian provocations.
The country has consistently advocated for a tough policy towards the Lukashenko regime and supports EU sanctions against Minsk.
