President of Belarus Oalexander Lukashenko announces the dismissal of more than 50 people, convicted in political and protest cases. According to the Belarusian authorities, the step was taken «for humanitarian reasons».
Meanwhile The United States lifts sanctions against the state-owned airline Belavia«. This will allow the carrier to regain access to international markets and services that were restricted in previous years.
Washington emphasised that the decision was a response to certain concessions made by Minsk, but that further actions would depend on the development of the human rights and political freedom situation in Belarus.
Analysts say Lukashenko is trying to demonstrate his willingness to engage in dialogue with the West amid economic pressure and growing dependence on Russia.
