According to the US side, Nicolas Maduro is charged with several serious crimes, including:
conspiracy to narcoterrorism;
conspiracy to importing cocaine to the United States;
Possession of automatic weapons and destructive devices;
conspiracy to possess automatic weapons and explosives against the United States of America.
The charges relate to activities that the US prosecutor's office classifies as a threat to US national security and an element of transnational drug trafficking.
The context of the case
The US Attorney General's Office notes that the case is part of a multi-year investigation into the Venezuelan leadership and its alleged involvement in international drug trafficking.
