Fuel for backup generators will last for 10 days

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported a critical situation at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is under Russian occupation.

Due to the prolonged power outage, the power units are being cooled by backup diesel generators. However, their fuel reserves will last no more than 10 days, The IAEA warns.

The threat of a large-scale accident

In the event of a power outage after the fuel reserves are exhausted, the reactor cooling system may shut down. This poses a direct threat to a nuclear accident with unpredictable consequences for both Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

The IAEA's call

The Agency calls for immediate action to restore stable power supply to the plant and ensure nuclear safety. It also emphasises the need to create a safe zone around ZNPP to avoid a recurrence of similar crises in the future.
