Small modular reactors are the future of Ukrainian energy
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has announced its support for deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) - modern new-generation nuclear facilities capable of ensuring a stable supply of electricity even in crisis conditions.
The agency reported that two pilot projects are already being implemented in cooperation with American partners, which should become the basis for the creation of networks of small power units on the territory of Ukraine.
Legislative initiative
On 9 October, at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy presented a draft law on the introduction of small modular reactors.
The initiators of the document believe that the development of the IMR will contribute to restoration of energy infrastructure, The energy sector is in a state of flux, especially after the massive Russian attacks on the power grid.
It is also emphasised that the launch of the Reduce Ukraine's dependence on gas and coal imports, will create new jobs and open up access to private investment in green nuclear energy.
Cooperation with the USA
American companies are already involved in the preparation of the technical basis and justification for the placement the first IMR in Ukraine.
According to preliminary expert estimates, the first modular reactors can be built for five years after the adoption of the relevant legislative framework.
