The Ministry of Energy explains why power outages differ between regions of Ukraine
The Ministry of Energy said that the key reason for the uneven power outages between the regions are destroyed or damaged generation in the frontline and border regions with Russia. It was there that Russian strikes hit thermal power plants, hydroelectric power plants, substations and other critical facilities the hardest.
As a result. the east, south and part of the central regions became energy deficient.
Why the West has more «loyal» schedules
The agency emphasised that the main electricity generation capacities are currently concentrated in Western Ukraine:
- The region is home to nuclear power plants, which remain the main stabilising factor;
- comes here Import of electricity from Europe;
- Western region potentially produces more than it consumes, So the deficit is minimal.
In contrast, the power system in the east and south receives significantly less energy than it produces due to the loss of generation capacity and transmission problems.
What this means for charts
- In the western regions, the outages may include shorter or less frequent.
- In the eastern, southern and central regions, on the contrary, the graphs are often tougher, as there is an objective lack of capacity to meet the needs.
- Balancing the system requires priority provision of critical infrastructure, which also affects the burden on the regions.
Context.
- Massive missile and drone strikes by the Russian Federation in 2024-2025 destroyed a significant part of thermal generation.
- Ukraine is actively repairing and restoring damaged facilities, but the process is lengthy and security-sensitive.
- Power engineers warn that the winter will be difficult and blackouts are inevitable.
