Ukraine forms international F-16 squadron to protect Kyiv from missiles and drones
Ukraine creates an international fighter squadron F-16, The unit is involved in the air defence of Kyiv and the region. The unit consists of Ukrainian pilots and veterans from USA і Netherlands with real combat experience.
Secret formation and combat missions
The squadron was formed in the utmost secrecy. Its key task is to strengthen the defence of the capital against Russian missiles and attack drones.
The unit is on combat duty almost every day. The pilots intercept cruise missiles, including «Calibres» and Х-101, and kamikaze drones. Most patrols take place at night, when Russian attacks are most intense.
The role of Western veterans
The journalists note that the participation of foreign veterans is critical because of their experience with the F-16's high-tech systems.
Ukrainian pilots already had basic training, but did not have many years of practical experience in the combat use of these fighters. This gap is partially compensated by Western pilots, most of whom have participated in operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
Foreign pilots work on six-month contracts with the possibility of extension. They are not formally integrated into an open command structure, but they perform combat missions directly alongside Ukrainian crews.
Importance for the defence of the capital
The emergence of an international F-16 squadron indicates the gradual strengthening of Ukraine's air defence system and deeper military cooperation with Western partners.
Regular patrolling and intercepting air targets could significantly reduce the effectiveness of Russian missile attacks on Kyiv and critical infrastructure.
