President warns of threat from Transnistria and intensifies cooperation with Ukraine
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the country is under threat of its territory being used as a springboard for a possible attack on the southern regions of Ukraine, in particular Odesa region.
According to her, the situation in the Transnistrian region, where Russian troops are stationed, remains unstable, and the Kremlin is trying to use this factor to put pressure on both Chisinau and Kyiv.
«Moldova has no intention of participating in the war, but we see risks that Russia may try to use the territory of Transnistria to destabilise the situation in Ukraine. This poses a danger to our country as well,» Sandu said.
Cooperation with Ukraine
Sandu emphasised that Moldova actively cooperates with Ukraine in the field of security and intelligence sharing. She also noted that Chisinau counts on the support of the EU and NATO to strengthen the country's defence capabilities.
Why it matters
There are about 1,500 Russian troops on the territory of Transnistria.
The region borders on Odesa Oblast, which is already experiencing a war and regular attacks from the Russian Federation.
Using Transnistria as a bridgehead could create an additional front for Ukraine.
