NABU and SAPO demand arrest or bail of UAH 45 million for Energoatom defendant Basov

National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) filed a motion with the court to impose a preventive measure Dmitry Basov, one of the defendants corruption case at Energoatom“.

The prosecution demands detention for a period of 60 days or making collateral in the amount of UAH 45.4 million.

«We insist on imposing the most severe measure of restraint, given the gravity of the crime and the risks of influencing witnesses,» a representative of the prosecutor's office said during the hearing.


Context.

Dmitry Basov is one of the key players in the a high-profile case of corruption in the energy sector, related to a state-owned enterprise “Energoatom”.

The investigation suspects that he participated in schemes to inflate prices for equipment and receive kickbacks“ through controlled companies.
According to media reports, some of the funds were transferred abroad, in particular to the accounts of firms linked to energy officials.


Public reaction

The scandal around Energoatom has become one of the of the largest anti-corruption investigations of the year.
As a reminder, earlier Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced relaunch of the company and full audit of its activities after the facts of abuse were made public.

The court is expected to make a decision on Basov's preventive measure in the coming days.
