The Alliance is launching a new phase of its defence strategy: attack drones are being deployed near Russia's borders and restrictions on pilots are being lifted.
This is reported by the Financial Times with reference to senior officials in NATO structures.

Start of large-scale exercises

In the coming weeks, the Alliance will hold a series of exercises along NATO's eastern flank, In particular, in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland.
They will include Strike drones, air defence systems, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.

The exercise is intended to test the ability to respond to possible Russian aggression in real time”, - says Financial Times.

New rules for the use of force

According to the publication, NATO removes previous restrictions for its pilots, that have been in place since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Now they can open fire on Russian aircraft, If they carry out dangerous manoeuvres or approach Alliance territory, they will be subject to a warning.

“The aim is to avoid provocations, but not to allow Russia to dictate the rules of the game in the air,” the FT quoted a source at NATO headquarters as saying.

Drones as a deterrent

Particular attention will be paid to deployment of strike UAVs - They will be installed along Russia's borders to monitoring, reconnaissance and potential engagement of air targets.
Analysts see this as a signal to the Kremlin that NATO is ready to act more decisively in response to Russia's aggressive behaviour.

This is no longer a show of force, but a real build-up of defence capabilities”, - adds Financial Times.
