A new wave of Ukrainianisation of terms from the NBU

The National Bank is considering a new wave of Ukrainianisation of terms

After the proposal to restore the historical name «shag» instead of «kopek» National Bank of Ukraine is considering the possibility of renaming the State Treasury into the “Treasury”.

This became known during a discussion of legislative initiatives between the National Bank and the Verkhovna Rada. According to the officials, the goal is to «return to Ukrainian financial traditions and vocabulary that has historical roots.».

Politicians« reaction and a joke about the »step"

During the meeting Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk commented on the initiative with humour:

«Checkmate,» he said, hinting at a possible new «name reform».

In response. NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi jokingly added that this name «fits well with the new financial language of the state».

Context.

The idea to restore the term «shag» as a small currency appeared as part of the symbolic renewal of the Ukrainian financial system. This term was used in the Ukrainian lands in the 17th and 18th centuries and is part of historical numismatics.
