Cockroaches are being turned into cyborg spies in Germany
Berlin-based start-up SWARM Biotactics is developing a technology to turn Madagascar cockroaches into cyborg scouts. The insects are equipped with microelectronic «backpacks» with cameras, microphones and even Doppler radar to work in environments where people or drones cannot reach.
How the technology works
The control is carried out through electrodes connected to the cockroaches' antennae. They stimulate the insects' natural navigational responses, allowing the operator to direct their movement or to start autonomous swarming.
What cyborg cockroaches can do
transfer 10-15 grams electronics;
can be controlled by an operator or act autonomously as part of a swarm;
perform reconnaissance in dungeons, ruins and enclosed spaces;
Each insect can have a separate role: camera, communication, positioning.
Why cockroaches
The developers note that cockroaches are hardy, inconspicuous and extremely mobile. They are able to survive in conditions of heat, high radiation and lack of oxygen, which makes them suitable for complex and dangerous environments.
Context.
The project is already being tested together with Bundeswehr. For now, we are talking exclusively about reconnaissance and search missions, without combat functions. In the future, the technology is planned to be used for search and rescue operations, In particular, when searching for people under the rubble.
The developers expect the first large-scale use cases to be available within 18-24 months.
