Germany increases military aid to Ukraine by €3bn in 2026

Germany significantly expands support for Ukraine in the defence sector: the Federal Government has decided Increase military aid by another €3 billion in the 2026 budget.

Thus, the total amount of funding for Ukraine in the German budget reached a record €11.5bn, which is the highest figure in the history of cooperation between the two countries.


Details of the announced decisions

Minister of Defence of Germany Boris Pistorius stated that:

  • Defence support for Ukraine in 2026 will be expanded with an additional package of €3 billion;

  • The funds will be used to purchase weapons, ammunition, air defence systems and long-term contracts with the German defence industry;

  • The federal budget for 2026 includes €11.5 billion in total aid to Ukraine, which is an unprecedented level for Germany.

In addition, Pistorius announced the allocation of another €150 million as part of the co-financing of the initiative PURL, aimed at joint arms purchases for Ukraine by Western countries.


Context.

Germany is one of the three largest donors to Ukraine in the military sphere.
Berlin's support has increased significantly against the backdrop of Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and the growing need for air defence systems.

In 2025-2026, Germany will focus on:

  • long-term defence contracts,

  • increasing the production of ammunition,

  • participation in international defence coalitions,

  • strengthening Ukraine's air defence.
