Environmental disaster recorded in Odesa: oil slick and dead birds found on the coast

An oil slick was found near one of the city's beaches in Odesa, as well as dead and contaminated birds. This was reported by the City Military Administration.

According to available information, the contamination was recorded near the beaches Dolphin and Spar. Local residents and volunteers are trying to save birds caught in the oil slicks.

Details of the incident

A dark oily substance similar to fuel oil has been observed on the coast. Some seabirds were found dead, and several more were in serious condition due to contamination of their feathers, which deprives them of the ability to fly and retain heat.

The origin of the oil slick has not yet been established. The relevant services are inspecting the area and taking samples for analysis.

Government response

The MBA notes that the environmental services, the State Emergency Service and specialised inspectorates have been notified of the situation. The source of pollution and the extent of environmental damage are being investigated.

Context.

The Black Sea has been repeatedly exposed to environmental threats due to shipping, accidental discharges of oil products and military operations. Amid the war, the risks of man-made and environmental incidents in the coastal regions have increased.
