On Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant started work on restoration of external power supply, The company's nuclear power plants are equipped with the necessary equipment to safely maintain cooling of reactors and spent nuclear fuel.

This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Repair of critical lines

The specialists started to repair of 750 kV Dniprovska and 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 power lines“, The buildings were damaged during the hostilities.
These lines are key to the stable operation of the plant's power supply systems.

Reactor safety remains a priority

The IAEA notes that the station continues to be in a state of complete shutdown, and all reactors remain in cold mode.
However, the lack of a stable external power supply creates risk of overheating of cooling systems in case of malfunctions of the backup diesel generators.

«Any power outage can put the safety of a facility at risk. Therefore, restoring power lines is an urgent task», - said the IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi.

Context and negotiations

The decision to start repair work was made after technical consultations between the Ukrainian side, the occupation administration of the plant and representatives of the IAEA.
Despite the difficult situation at the frontline, the agency continues to insist on providing “nuclear safety zones” around ZNPP.

«We are working with both sides to minimise the risks. Safe operation of the plant must remain beyond politics», - said Grossi.

Why it matters

Zaporizhzhya NPP remains the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
It has not been generating electricity since 2022, but requires constant cooling, to avoid overheating of the nuclear fuel.
Previously, the station has repeatedly switched to backup power supply due to damage to the lines, which carries the risk of an accident.
