Orban: the coming days will show whether the war will end or spread to Europe

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban said that the talks between the United States and Russia have become of crucial importance. According to him, the moment has now come that will determine the further development of events:

«The key moment has come. In the coming days, it will become clear whether the war will move towards Europe or whether its flame will die out.».

Orban stressed that it was Washington's contacts with Moscow should determine whether the situation can be stabilised or whether the conflict risks expanding.

Context.

The Hungarian prime minister has repeatedly made statements that are at odds with the position of most EU countries on the war in Ukraine. He has advocated direct Western negotiations with Russia and called for «peace initiatives», which critics say play into the hands of the Kremlin.

His new statement comes amid intensified US-Russian contacts, as well as internal discussions in Europe about how to proceed.
