Putin talks about a possible summit in Budapest

Orban offered Hungary as a platform for negotiations and complained to Putin about the consequences of the war for Budapest

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban during a meeting with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Moscow said that his country allegedly ready to become a platform for negotiations regarding the war waged by russia against ukraine.

Orbán also complained that a full-scale invasion was already negatively affects the economy and security situation Hungary.

What Putin said

In turn, the Kremlin leader said that:

• «relations between moscow and budapest continue to develop, despite the difficulties»;

• Russia is allegedly interested in a «peaceful settlement»;

• contacts between the us and russia that have been ongoing in recent weeks may «culminate in a summit in Budapest».

These words came against the backdrop of Orban's personal talks with Putin - not for the first time since the outbreak of a full-scale war.

Context.

Hungary often blocks or slows down the EU's decisions to support Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, and Orban regularly holds separate talks with the Kremlin.

Despite harsh criticism from its partners, Budapest insists that it seeks «peace» and «stability», although its contacts with Russia are increasingly at odds with the EU's general policy.
