Orban said that the war had already been decided: the Russians had won, and the only question was peace.
Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban once again made a scandalous statement about the war in Ukraine. According to him, “the war has already been decided” and Russia has allegedly won.
Orban emphasised that the main question now is whether the government will be able to, When and with whom the Kremlin will sign a peace agreement.
Political context
It is not the first time that the Hungarian prime minister has voiced theses that coincide with Kremlin narratives. He regularly opposes EU sanctions, calls for an end to military aid to Ukraine, and offers “peace talks” on Moscow's terms.
Analysts note that such statements by Orban increase tensions within the EU, as most EU and NATO member states support Ukraine and insist on its victory in the war.
Reactions in Ukraine and the EU
In Ukraine, Orban's statements are seen as an attempt to legitimise Russia's position and undermine the unity of Western allies.
European politicians have also criticised the Hungarian prime minister for his cooperation with Moscow and his unwillingness to support joint EU security decisions.
